While a flat foundation mirrors the look of a traditional box spring, their inner components differ. A flat foundation is composed of wood or metal slats, whereas a box spring contains springs. A flat foundation can be paired with our patented GelFlex® Grid, as well as foam, hybrid or latex mattresses. A box spring is only compatible with innerspring mattresses. Both serve the purpose of providing height, support, and a flat surface to rest a mattress on top of within a bed frame.
This answer depends largely on the height of your mattress as well as the aesthetic look and ergonomic bed entry height you’re hoping to achieve. For a more modern, low-profile look, the low 5” option may suit you best. For additional height that may ease getting in and out bed, the standard 9” may better suit you. If your decorative bed frame is panel style, you need a Flat Foundation. Bed frames are either panel or platform style. Panel frames typically have a cross-slat support system, meaning there are 3-5 horizontal slats with gaps 15-35 inches in length, requiring the use of a box spring or flat foundation for adequate support. In contrast, platform frames have slats with less than 3.5" gaps or a completely solid surface and thus provide sufficient support on their own for a mattress.
