Frequently Asked Questions

None of the Purple™ Bed Frames require an extra box spring or foundation. As for other bed frames, this depends on your particular bed frame and your specific mattress. Purple’s high-quality bed frames are designed to securely support your mattress without a box spring.

For the most part, however, you’ll want to use a box spring with a traditional bed frame and innerspring mattress. In fact, many mattresses won’t honor their warranties unless you use them in tandem with a box spring, so make sure you know what your mattress manufacturer requires. Depending on the design of the mattress, using it without a box spring can lead to serious harm.

However – some more modern and innovative mattresses, like those from Purple, are designed to be used without a box spring so long as you have a strong, supportive bed frame. If you have a memory foam mattress, poly foam mattress, or Purple Bed, no box spring is required on most modern bed foundations. But why would you want to use anything other than a Purple mattress, anyway?

If you’re using a platform bed frame or an adjustable bed frame, you’ll likely want to choose a mattress that doesn’t require a box spring in order to provide you with the right kind of support and comfort. Platform bed frames already offer the kind of support the box spring would typically provide, and an adjustable bed can’t accommodate a box spring because the box spring can’t, you know, adjust.

The following Purple bed frames come with headboard attachments: the platform bed frame, and the Purple Foundation. A headboard may be used with Purple adjustable bases and can be attached using adjustable headboard brackets (not included). They can be added to your purchase before checking out, or you can purchase them separately by reaching out to Purple Customer Care at 1-888-848-0248.

Before you buy a headboard, verify the distance between the struts to make sure it will fit your frame. You can check the back of your bed frame for any bolts or screw holes and measure the distance between them. You’ll also want to measure width and height so that you choose a headboard that fits proportionally. Headboards work best when they sit up to three inches past the frame corner in width and roughly 14 inches above the top of the mattress.

Then, find the headboard bolts on your frame, and screw your new headboard into place. The process is roughly the same for floor-standing headboards as well – they attach to your frame via the bolts provided, but they are designed to rest their bases on the ground once attached.

Note: The purple Headboard is not compatible with Purple adjustable bases.

Like a good casserole, bed frames can be made of a little bit of everything. Most commonly, bed frames are made of wood, metal, or some combination of the two. You can find a metal bed frame made of steel, while some have solid wood slats. A minimalist bed frame goes well with a variety of bedroom furniture.

Many people prefer having a metal frame that is upholstered. The new Purple Foundation is an example of this kind of bed frame. The frame’s supports are made of high-density polyethylene, so they don’t creak make noise like wood does. Plus, the joints of the Purple Foundation are reinforced with nylon buffers to help prevent squeaking. To top it all off, the accompanying slipcover gives you a beautiful, polished, upholstered look.

At Purple, you can find a well-made, sturdy, reliable and fashionable Metal Platform Bed Frame for as little as $159, or if you prefer an adjustable frame, the Purple Premium Smart Base starts at $995. Purple also offers the Purple Foundation, which features a stylish upholstered bed frame at a price point starting at $415.

The great thing about bed frames is that you can find them at just about any price point — it depends on the quality of materials and craftsmanship. You can get economy bed frames that are very inexpensive, but also flimsy quality, or you can go to the other end of the spectrum and get elegant, hand-crafted bed frames that cost a pretty penny. We’ve seen ranges anywhere from less than $100 to more than $5,000, so you have quite a lot of wiggle room to meet your budget.

Bed frames at the higher end of the cost spectrum may include features like adjustability, expansive under-bed storage, luxury bed rails, and an extravagant headboard and footboard. While pricey, the right bed frame can help you get the best night’s sleep possible — especially if you’re dealing with issues like sleep apnea, snoring, or other health challenges that an adjustable frame can help meet.

In general, you want to keep it pretty simple and get the bed frame that matches the size of your mattress. If you have a twin size mattress, you can go for a twin size frame, and the same goes for a double mattress or a queen mattress. Things can get a little tricky if you have a king size mattress. Make sure you’re clear on whether you have a standard king size or a California king size. The frame sizes are slightly different between those two – so they’re not interchangeable, and you can find different frames to fit these two slightly different king sizes.

Make sure your headboard size complements the size and proportion of your bed frame. As a general rule, you want your headboard to be the same width of your frame — or no more than 3 inches wider. However, some adventurous bedroom designers prefer a canopy bed with extra-wide headboards that are twice the width of the bed frame. It’s really up to you.

When it comes to height, you typically don’t want your headboard to extend more than 14 inches above the top of your mattress, especially for a twin size bed. But for decorating purposes, you really can go as tall as you like, though most decorators would counsel against going for a headboard that’s taller than the bed is long.

For the most part, bed frames will allow you to attach a headboard – and if you go with a metal bed frame from Purple, we include all the right brackets and accessories to make attaching a headboard easy.

It’s hard for us to say for sure about ANY bed frame, but chances are that if you have your heart set on a headboard, you can find a way to make it happen. Keep in mind that not all headboards are actually attached to bed frames – some are attached directly to the wall. So even though they provide the same look and feel as a headboard attached to your frame, you don’t have to worry about having all the right accessories included with your bed frame to make that happen.

Warranties for Purple bed frames range from 5-years for the metal platform base and the Foundation, and the Purple Premium Smart Base and Premium Plus Smart Base have a 10-year limited warranty covered by Ergomotion.

The life of your bed frame will depend on the quality and materials of the frame. A sturdy metal bed will last longer than a frame made of thin aluminum or particle wood. There’s no one-size-fits-all answer, so make sure to check the warranty before you buy so that you have a good idea of what to expect in terms of lifetime performance from your bed frame. Cheaper, lower-quality bed frames may only give you a couple of years’ worth of consistent and stable performance, while more expensive bed frames often come with a full lifetime guarantee.
